BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ORGANISATION:
Bangladesh Sericulture Research & Training Institute (BSRTI) was established in 1962 comprising two units: Silk cum Lac Research Institute and Silk Technological Institute under the then erstwhile East Pakistan Small Cottage Industries Corporation (EPSCIC). In 1974 two units were combined together and named as Silk Research and Training Institute. In 1978 BSB was created and Silk Research and Training Institute was brought under the control of BSB as a technical component and renamed as Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute (BSRTI) in 1980. On 9 July 2003 this Institution was separated from Bangladesh Sericulture Board (BSB) and established as an independent Research Organization through an "Act" under the Ministry of Textiles, which is now renamed as Ministry of Textiles and Jute. In fact, the institute started conducting the actual research activities in 1981 after establishment of different laboratories and rearing houses. To facilitate breeding works 59 mulberry varieties and 85 silkworm races both indigenous and exotic are being maintained in the germplasm bank of the institute. At present the institute consists of five research sections and one Training section. There are a Regional Sericulture Research Centre at Chandraghona, Rangamati and a Germplasm Maintenance Centre at Sakoa, Panchagarh under BSRTI. BSRTI also looks after the P3 station of BSB.
MANPOWER :
There are 126 approved posts of officers and staff in the present organogram of BSRTI, which includes only 14 posts of scientists. However, an organogram of 142 posts including 37 posts for scientists is under consideration for approval of the Govt.

LIBRARY :
The library provides book lending and reading facilities to the scientists, trainers and trainees/students of BSRTI. The library is contained with 4000 volumes of books and periodicals and 750 volumes of reprints and photocopies of different research articles.
PUBLICATION OF THE INSTITUTE :
The scientists of the institute have published about 260 scientific research papers in the national and international journals. The institute regularly published "Bulletin of Sericultural Research" annually. The bulletin is published as Bangladesh Journal of Sericulture. "Sericulture Training" & "Development of Sericulture Technology" have also been published by the institute. A good number of books on sericulture written by the scientists of BSRTI are waiting for publication.
RECOGNITION FOR THE CONTRIBUTION OF BSRTI :
This institute was awarded Begum Jebunnesa and Kazi Mahbubullah Gold Medal Award-1993 with Tk. 30,000/= through BARC for outstanding contribution in evolving new silkworm race and formulation of uzicide, a chemical against infestation of uzifly, a serious pest of silkworm.
